Epilogue

Homework for the Week of April 1, 2021 - Make sure you read the next chapter of the book, TBWHTW, Ch. 12 Bigger and Brighter.  Also, finish your madman reflection.  Finally, make a windmill out of random materials you have around your house.  Roomies, you can bring in your creation OR take a pic and post it in your Brain Book in your Digital Notebook.  We will share in class.

Homework for the Week of March 8, 2021 - Today was a rough day technically speaking.  We had Plot Twist after Plot Twist.  We were on plan E for one assignment.  But the beauty of today is NOT GIVING UP!  We made it and accomplished our assignments.  We introduced Hink Pinks and worked on creating and solving these fun puzzles.  We continued with Lesson 11 Algebra - adding zeros or blue pawns or white stars to our equation to help us solve for x.  We discussed TBWHTW and compared William's story to the Olympic Medalist Elena Myers.  Her story is so inspiring - Remember a bad day may just turn into your best day ever!

For homework, compete the evaluative paragraph comparing William's life and Elena's life.

  • How does Elena Myers' story compare with William’s story?

  • How did Elena and William handle disappointment?

  • Give a specific example of how you have handled a disappointment in your life.  Can you now think of a better way you might have handled that disappointment?

  • Zoomies – put this paragraph in your Digital Brain Book on a page you title as Ch. 9 Library. Roomies – Add this to your Brain Book on the next blank page.

Also Read (or listen to) chapter 10, Harvest Time.  Listen to the chapter here.

Homework for the Week of March 1, 2021 - We had a very busy day in Target working on Convergent Thinking puzzles, Ken Ken.  We had a challenge to see what level we could get to.  Kudos to those that reached level 3 and 4!!  Woohoo!  We worked on Hands on Equations Lesson 11 - Adding zeros.  This was part 1, so we will have part 2 next week.  We did another Yamodo activity making a "Praxle."  Very creative!  We continued with another vignette of Gifted Hands.  We saw an anger-tempered Ben but also saw a college student who was focused today.  We are getting closer to seeing the end of the story.  Finally, we looked at the next 2 chapters of our novel, TBWHTW.  We were not happy with the choices that had to be made with Khamba.  But we did see the hope in Chapter 8.  For homework,

1.)  Read/Listen to Chapters 9.  Click here to listen to the chapter.

2.) Finish your Creative piece and create your Flip Grid to share.  Create a visual or written piece that represents how William and his family felt when the crops were finally ready to eat.  Think of the relief, hope, and joy they felt.  Be creative!  Make sure you use color for your artwork.  You can always look back at the TEAMS assignment for more information.

3.) Create a Flip Grid to share your artwork. https://flipgrid.com/5303b5db  Share your artwork and explain why you did what you did.  Make it quick - it's just a platform all Zoomies and Roomies can use.

Homework for the Week of February 22, 2021 - Today we learned about the UN Goal #4- Quality Education.  We learned some astonishing statistics with the educational quality around the world, and the amount of children still not going to school (57 million)!  We then dug deeper into Malawi's educational situation.  We saw that almost 1/2 of their primary students drop out before graduating at the age of 13.  Then more than 1/2 of the students that go to secondary school (high school) drop out too.  One of the most shocking statistics was learning that they have so many students in one class - sometimes over 100!!  We continued with our Algebra lesson #10 and worked on an old favorite logic puzzle, Hidato, pushing up to a number sequence of 100.  We saw another vignette of Gifted Hands, and were shocked at how Ben's anger is controlling him right now.  I wonder what will happen next??  You will have to wait 14 days to find out!

For homework, Read the next 2 chapters of TBWHTW (ch. 7-8).  You can listen to ch.7 here and ch. 8 here.  If you are listening to the story, jot down some important events in your Brain Book.  This can help when we are doing activities next class.  What UN Goal will we look at next?

Homework for the Week of February 8, 2021- We had a good day today in Target!  We learned about UN Goal #2 - Zero Hunger.  This was inspired by our homework reading as we saw that Malawi (including William's family) was struggling with food and a drought.  We continued to look into the foods of Malawi in our Asynchronous time.  Then we took a William quote analyzing problems we were either immune to (they couldn't happen to me) or invisible to (we never knew it existed) us.  We worked on Sudoku - great job ES!!  We also continued with Hands on Equations with lesson 10.  We did much better after our lesson 9 practice.  Way to go!  For homework this week, read the next chapter of our novel, TBWHTW, ch. 6.  You can listen to it here.  You don't have a written assignment this week, but as you read/listen, think about how different school is for William.

Homework for the Week of February 1, 2021 - Today was a great day to be in Target.  We had an inspiring discussion of UN Goal #6 "Clean Water and Sanitation."  I think we were shocked to see some of the conditions of the world.  This was inspired by our read of TBWHTW.   We continued with looking into the next 2 chapters and seeing more of Malawi and how William lived.  We completed a massive Quote Fall in Convergent Thinking and rocked our Algebra Lesson today.  We also saw more of Ben Carson's life looking at the obstacles he faced and how his mom sacrificed for both of her boys.  For homework, complete the following:

1.Create a toy made out of “trash", recyclables, old toy parts, etc.  It must be able to be played. Upload a picture to your TGWHTW tab.  Roomies and Zoomies will need to upload a picture on your Digital Notebooks.

2.Read/listen to Chapters 4 and 5 of TBWHTW.  Chapter 4 link is available here and Chapter 5 link is available here.

Homework for the Week of January 25, 2021 - Today was a Plot Twist kind of day in Target.  Links weren't working, Algebra didn't show up in some Notebooks, and even Dory had to take off with a pen (and Mrs. Yoder had to chase her off camera)!  But all in all, we had a very productive day.  We continued with Elimination Grids, a new Yamodo for Divergent Thinking, Lesson 9 of Hands on Equations (Zero the Hero), and moving on with our Unit on TBWHTW.  For homework, Be sure to read the next two chapters of the book, TBWHTW (Chapters 2 and 3).  You can listen to Ch. 2 with this link.  You can listen to Ch. 3 with this link.  As you read/listen, think about the one Most Important word for each chapter.  This can be a word in the chapter or a word that you think of.  Be prepared to share.

Homework for the Week of January 18, 2021 - Well... we have started out 2021 virtually (as a certain Cat Captain pointed out today).  I'm glad I got to see everyone's smile today - or most of your smiles.  We completed convergent thinking, divergent thinking (doopaloops), evaluative thinking and algebraic.  We had a full day of learning!  We will be taking a journey to Malawi through the pages of William's book "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" (forever known as TBWHTW going forward).  For homework, Read the Prologue and Chapter 1 of the book.  If you don't have your book yet, listen to these chapters using the links on our Discover Malawi PowerPoint from today.  This is located in TEAMS.  Also, reflect on chapter 1 "When Magic Ruled the World" in your TBWHTW Unit Tab in your Notebook.  I can't wait to see you in seven days...

Homework for the Week of December 15, 2020 - Today was a working day for our TED Talks evaluating current talks.  We took a break to get some Convergent Thinking in - Holiday Style.  Most students chose Word Search with a Twist.  It is quite challenging to find the words without the words!!  I think our highest was 25/35 words found before we left!  Great perseverance!  For homework, make sure to go on Flip Grid and evaluate Grace and Isaiah's Flip Grid giving great advice on how they can make it better!  Then, practice your Flip Grid adding the details needed to make it even better.  Once you are confident you are ready... Make your Final Flip Grid of your TED Talk.  These will be the ones that we watch on our first day back in January.  They are due by Thursday, December 17th.   Make sure to find a nice quiet place to record with no distractions, good lighting, speak loudly in the microphone, and don't move/spin while giving it.  In true 2020 fashion, we must do our TED Talks digitally.  The code for the Real Deal Ted Talk is https://flipgrid.com/0a248b9d.  I will also post this code on TEAMS for easy access.

Remember we won't be meeting next Thursday, December 17th due to Holiday Parties, but we will meet in January 2021!  Information for the new semester will come out soon!

Homework for the Week of December 10, 2020 - Today was a huge day for our TED Talks!  We spent a lot of time listening and reviewing each other's Talks - giving valuable feedback.  Remember, this is a 2 day experience.  Some of us are EXPERT Evaluators!  I was so impressed with the type of feedback given to our students in class.  WOW!  I was bragging on you and told Ms. Zentner, I want you to edit my thesis paper when I'm finished with my schooling. Since we are not finished with this, we will continue next week.  We also were able to complete a Ken Robinson quote fall and evaluate its meaning.  Remember to not set your goal too low, because you won't grow even when you succeed!  For homework, look at the group you are in below to know what to do.

1.  If you were able to share your TED Talk today, review the feedback you received.  Many people have ideas of what you can add to your talk to make it even better!  Start searching for ideas/research/quotes/stories to add.  Find the perfect place in your TED Talk to enhance your great ideas!  You can get note cards and begin jotting down the important parts of your TED Talk to help you memorize it.

2.  If you weren't able to share your TED Talk today, you can review your script and/or Flip Grid.  Look at the feedback of your group members.  Start thinking of ways to enhance your story.  Remember most of your homework will come next week!

Homework for the Week of November 30, 2020 - Today was a busy day in Target!  We went over catchy titles for our TED Talk and voted on our faves.  We continued with Venn Perplexors.  They gave us a tough time again.  We also worked on some Scattegories in Divergent Thinking - Remember to keep these for our next Target day so we can do Scratch.  Then we completed an Algebra check up - are we ready for Level 2?  Finally, we continued working on our TED Talks focusing on the endings.  For homework, finish writing your TED Talk ending.  Read over your TED Talk and time yourself... our goal is 3-5 minutes in length.  Then when you feel confident, use the Flip Grid code (https://flipgrid.com/270149e6) to make a video of your TED Talk for me to listen to.  Also, your TED Partner will listen to it too.  Make sure you give feedback to your TED Partner.  The list of partners will be listed in our TEAMS.  Have a GREAT Thanksgiving!  See you in 14 days!

Homework for the Week of November 16, 2020 - We had a great day in Target!  We started with an Affective lesson with many lessons to be learned.  My Shoes, a powerful short, helped lead us into Convergent Thinking with leveled Quote Falls.  I'm so proud of those students who challenged themselves with the harder quote fall - or did both!  That makes my teacher heart smile!  We completed Lesson 7 in Hands On Equations - drawing out our balance and legal moves.  We then continued with our Unit Work - writing our TED Talk.  This will be our focus for homework also.  For homework, complete the following:

1.Continue writing your TED Talk.  You should have your introduction and the middle completed.  This includes your research you found.  We’ll work on the ending next week.

2.Read your TED Talk to someone in your family or a friend.  Get feedback on what you still need for your TED Talk or any suggestions they had.

3.Think of a catchy Title for your TED Talk.  Make a list of at least 3 titles for your talk.  Put a star next to the one you think is the catchiest so far.

Homework for the Week of November 9, 2020 - Today was back to our new normal.  It was good to have more students back in class!  Who would have thought we would have Hurricane Days in northern Georgia??  We visited an old friend in Convergent Thinking, Venn Perplexors.  It was tough at first, since we haven't done them since March!!  But we were getting better and better as we continued.  Then we did a TED Riddle - which we (Great job to the 3 students who came up with the solution!) solved!  Very complex thinking and explaining today (Avalynn especially went all out on her explanation).  We also completed our Hands on Equations Lesson 6 - next week Lesson 7!!  We worked on our Door Doodles and our TED Talk for Unit Work.  For homework,

watch the TED Talk “How Simple Ideas Lead to Scientific Discoveries.”  The link is here.

Think: How did this speaker use research to develop his big idea?

•Go through your story arc (all your work from class).  Make a list of any areas that need outside research to help your idea.  Write these in your Brain Book.

•Research facts, statistics, names and dates, etc. that will help your TED Talk.  Take notes in your Brain Book.  Include the website you used at the top of your page.  You should have at least 3 pages of written work for your TED Talk.  Keep elaborating to add more details!

Homework for the Week of November 2, 2020 - Today was a weird day for sure!  We started with 3 students and eventually ended with 12 today.  We went over some difficult math art for Halloween.  It was a challenge on the screen.  We also looked at our unit work - how to begin a TED Talk: give a reason for your audience to care, a surprising statistic, unexpected observation, thought-provoking question, a personal story, etc.  We are using this time to work on our TED Talks.  For homework, work on your outline of your TED Talk (story arc).  Think about the Hook, Closing, and everything in between.  Then look at the story arc, and decide where you will need research.  Research facts, statistics, percentages, names/dates, definitions, and solutions for your TED Talk.  Look for any way to enhance your talk.  Be prepared to share next week.

Homework for the Week of October 26, 2020 - Today went by fast for Mrs. Yoder.  We completed a Quote Fall for Convergent Thinking, almost solved a TED Riddle with our Convergent thinking with a twist, Algebra Lesson 6 (part 1), and we worked on our Unit Work getting closer to our TED Talk.  So many people have asked, "What does the TED stand for in TED Talk?"  I want you to look it up and email me the answer when you find it.  I'm looking for the first 3 students to do so!!  For homework,

think of your idea for your TED Talk.  Use Divergent thinking to brainstorm (in your Brain Book) anything that will support your BIG IDEA.

•Snippet of a conversation

•A quote that fits your talk

•A story that relates to your idea

•A fact or statistics that supports your idea

•Metaphor/analogy that helps explain your idea

•A personal moment

•A physical object that will help others understand

Find 2 or more of the above to help drive your TED Talk!  The more you have, the better your talk.

Homework for the week of October 19, 2020 - Today was a jam-packed day of Convergent thinking, Algebra, and Unit Work on our TED Talks.  We looked at a different Sudoku - a color Sudoku.  For some, it was relaxing, and we tackled it with ease.  For others, this was quite challenging!  We continued with our Hands on Equations unit reviewing a lesson from last year.  We looked at throughlines in different TED Talks, and thinking of our own for our talk.  Then we ended our day with jotting down ideas for our TED Talk Story Arc - beginning, middle, and ending on sticky notes.  Some of us didn't finish - continue working on those at home.  For homework, watch the following TED Talk, The Mindset of a Champion: click here for the link.  Then answer the following questions in your BRAIN BOOK (Zoomies: be ready to show me next week).

1.Identify the Throughline

2.Identify How the speaker hooked the audience.

3.Identify How the speaker closed the TED Talk.

4.Answer this question: Was this talk engaging to you?  Explain your answer.

Homework for the week of October 12, 2020 - Today was a great day!  It was a tough day, but a great one!  Thank you to my "roomies" and "zoomies" for being so patient as we worked together to make Target work.  We completed another Ken Ken puzzle - a little more challenging.  Many students ROCKED it!  We also worked on Divergent Thinking with our name tags and official Door Doodles.  When we worked on our Unit Work - students had a chance to practice a "Yes, and" Improvisational game to work on the skill of thinking on our feet.  It was tough, but we rocked it again!  We also looked at ideas for our TED Talks - some students already know their focus!!  For homework, students will explore what a Throughline is.  Virtual students will use the Throughline Practice sheet in their Class Notebook.  Answer the questions based on what you read/see.  F2F students complete your Throughline Exploration sheet you got in class.  The link for the TED Talk is: Superhero Training: What you can do right now.

Homework for the week of October 5, 2020 - We had a great day in Target!  We again had some technical issues with some students - perseverance and problem solving skills were on par again!!  Thank you for being patient today getting back in the classroom.  We completed a newer Convergent Thinking activity - Ken Ken puzzle.  It was a challenge for some!  We also collaborated with Divergent Thinking completing round robin stories - this was harder than we thought in our Collaboration Tab in our Notebook.  We are still working on the best ways to collaborate virtually.  We also watched some TED Talks and analyzed the message and how engaging they were.  We saw how important humor is to keep people engaged.

For Asynchronous/Independent Work Time, complete the following:

  1. My TED Talk Idea in your Unit Work section of Notebook.  Look at 5 ideas, think of who will benefit from a TED Talk on that idea.  Then think of your purpose of that talk.

  2. Finish work from class - Ken Ken puzzle

Have a wonderful Fall Break!! See you in October!

Homework for the Week of September 21, 2020 - Today was a great day to be in Target!  We had some Tech issues, but thankfully our perseverance kept us going and coming back for more!  We competed a Hidato today for Convergent thinking.  We also had a "Passcode" Riddle - Great job Laila for solving the challenge!  For Divergent thinking, we started our Door Doodle.  We are looking at the opportunities/chances/obstacles that can come our way and creating a visual.  What will be on the other side of your door? And finally, we looked at our ideas for our TED Talk - our passions.  Making passion badges that led us to our Idea Statements.  Be ready to vote for your favorite ideas!

For Asynchronous Work Time, complete the following:

  1. Finding Your Idea – Complete the Idea Journal p.12 in your Unit Work Tab of Notebook.

  2. Share ideas – Share these ideas with your parents/older siblings/adults close to you.  Tally each person’s favorites.  Keep a running list of these tallies.

  3. Finish Work from class -  Hidato, Door Doodle, Passion Badges

Homework for the Week of September 15, 2020 - Today was another good day in Target!  We completed Convergent and Divergent Thinking activities - I loved the ideas for your SCAMPER activity.  I can't wait to see the sunglasses you SCAMPER!  We worked on looking at what makes an idea great and worthy of sharing for a TED Talk.  We will continue next week looking at this further.  We also looked at "Diamond and Spade" feedback and how they are more helpful than just "Heart and Club" feedback.

For Independent/Asynchronous Work Time:

  1. Review the TED Talk, “Cleaning our Oceans: a big plan for a big problem – Found in TEAMS.  Fill out the next section of your IDEA Journal 11.  This is found in your Class Notebook.  We did the first section together in class today.

  2. Watch the Flip Grids and Give Feedback on at least 2 – diamonds and spades feedback only.  The link is provided in TEAMS.

  3. SCAMPER a pair of sunglasses – Assignment in TEAMS, work will be done in your BRAIN BOOK.  Review what SCAMPER means - This is in your Class Notebook in Divergent Thinking if you need it.  Remember to choose your best idea and illustrate a larger picture of it.  Label it also.

Homework for the Week of September 7, 2020 - Today was a packed day filled with almost every standard we have!!  We worked on Convergent Thinking with an Elimination Grid, Evaluative Thinking with TED Talk examples, and Collaborated/Communicated virtually with each other through Class Notebook.  We are getting better and better with our different platforms.

For Independent/Asynchronous Work Time:

1. Review the TED Talk "Lemons to Lemonades" and evaluate the performance using the Evaluating TED Talk: Grows and Glows sheet in your Class Notebook, in the Evaluative Thinking Tab.  You don't have to share this with me - I will be able to go in your Notebook to check your work.

2. Idea Journal 8 in your Class Notebook, in Unit Work.  Tell more about you.

3. "30 Seconds of Fame" Flip Grid assignment found in TEAMS.

As always, thank you for a GREAT day!

Homework for the Week of August 31, 2020 - Today was our first official day in Target!  We had a great day, even with some technical difficulties.  Many parents were contacting us through Remind, which is a great resource while we are on CTLS with the students.

As a recap, we go to know about our Target Teachers, we learned about Virtual Etiquette in our classroom, we talked through how to use CTLS for assignments/navigation, and we looked at how to take a mistake and turn it into a beautiful oops!  We had several "Plot Twists" today as things didn't go our way!  We are learning to be flexible with that!

Students will need to complete the following assignments:

  1. In your Brain Book, evaluate our quote fall. "When you make a mistake, Oops! Think of it as an opportunity to make something beautiful!" What does it mean to you?

  2. Complete your All About Me PowerPoint slide.  Submit it in CTLS.

  3. Use Divergent Thinking to take an imperfect leaf, and make it into a Beautiful Oops!  Remember to keep this in your Brain Book.

These assignments can be found in CTLS in our Digital Session.
