Fourth Grade Homework

The Last Day of Target!!  - Thank you for an awesome last day of Target!  You totally filled my bucket today!!  I hope you remember to fill others' buckets daily.  Remember your Bucket List!  Add goals to it!  Mentally mark them off when you accomplish your goals!  Have a wonderful summer and a fabulous 5th grade year.  I'll miss you all!  There are no Target Tallies today.  We will send Progress Reports out next week.

Homework for the End of the Year - Today was a great day!  Entomophagy was a HUGE hit!  We enjoyed tasting mealworm larvae and chocolate covered crickets.  Most students, and I quote, said, "It's not too bad."  They were crunchy and delicious.  Most students enjoyed the "dessert" form smothered in chocolate.  We continued with our PowerPoint Presentations today.  They look fabulous!  Many students added entomophagy into their presentations; what a great addition to the information!  For homework, finish working on your PowerPoint.  Remember to share with Ms. Zentner or myself when it's complete.  Also, finish the novel, MSOTM.  We will miss you guys!  Wave at us when you see us in the halls!

Homework for the Week of March 29, 2021 - Today was splish-splash day in Target.  We concentrated on water and what we can do to clean and purify dirty water we find in the Amazon.  Tribes worked together to plan a water filter.  Congratulations to Last Kids Alive (LKA) for winning the challenge.  We created the winning tribe's water filter and tested it's strength.  It definitely made the water cleaner BUT we still wouldn't want to drink it!  We worked on Algebra, finishing up Unit 1.  We also continued with Ben Carson's story, Gifted Hands.  We are seeing how Ben and his brother are changing when they started reading and learning more.  For homework, students will need:

•Read (or listen) to Chapters 15-17. Listen to chapter 15 here.  Listen to chapter 16 here.  Listen to chapter 17 here.

•Work on your PowerPoint – Save to your Office 365 Account as your names.Amazon.

** Optional: Make a water filter and share results.  Braylie has already finished hers!!  Before I can even get the blog done.  Way to go Braylie!!!

Homework for the Week of March 22, 2021 - Today was a great day in Target!  We had a special guest join us via Zoom, Dr. Quave, ethnobotanist and professor at Emory University.  We learned so much new information!  We continued with our Survival unit researching the good, the bad, and the ugly (😂) in the Amazon.  We are in the midst of creating a PowerPoint showcasing our new knowledge.  We worked on a Quote Fall today - Great job Taylor D!  Fastest Quote Faller in the Nickajack area!!  We continued with Ben Carson's story realizing a secret that Ben's mom kept from him for years.  We will see how she overcomes this!  For homework, you will need to do the following:

1.  Finish your research using the sites provided on Cool Websites on the blog (Amazon sites 1-3).  Jot down your ideas in your Brain Book.  Remember you are looking for good/bad plants and animals in the Amazon, ways to safely drink water, and anything from Dr. Quave today.

2.  Begin working on your PowerPoint - remember you can work with a partner but it will be more difficult to do so.  You will need to share your work with your partner's school email account to do this.  Your PowerPoint will need 1 title slide, several Informational slides (at least 3), and a Reference slide (sharing the websites you used for research).  Add pictures to enhance your presentation, organize your information, and make it clear and concise to understand.  We will do this in class next week, so it doesn't have to be done completely at home.

3.  Read or listen to Chapters 13 and 14 in our novel, MSOTM up to page 101.  Be ready to discuss next week.  Listen to Chapter 13 here.  Listen to Chapter 14 here.

Homework for the Week of March 16, 2021 - Today was a fabulous half day in Target!!  We continued working on our Survivor unit.  We broke into tribes for another tribal challenge looking at supplies and deciding which ones are needed for our survival.  Great job to our tribes for working together.  We will have a Virtual and F2F tribal winner.  They will be announced next Tuesday!  We also read Ch. 11 of MSOTM, In Which Frightful Learns her ABCs.  For homework,

•Read Chapter 12 (I Find a Real Live Man) or Listen to the chapter

My Side of the Mountain Chapter 12 Part 1 – YouTube Link

My Side of the Mountain Chapter 12 Part 2 – YouTube Link

•When Sam and Bando contributed several things to the life of each other.  Make a chart in which you list the things that each did for the other.  Everyone complete this is your Digital Brain Book on the page Ch. 12 Homework.

•Weigh one day’s worth of food – estimate if you don’t have a scale.  Have a parent help with this.  Remember we are walking for 14 days.

Homework for the Week of ??? - Today was the hardest Survivor Challenge yet!  We worked in tribes to solve several logic puzzles in a Digital Break Out.  We used our perseverance to stick with it.  Congratulations to the Warriors for breaking out first.  Also, congratulations to the other tribes who broke out!  We now have a list of supplies - you can view them in the Evaluative Thinking tab in your Digital Notebook.  Before our next class, read over the list and highlight the supplies you think are necessary for our survival.  We completed a Venn Perplexer Check up, the beginning of Algebra Lesson 7, and continued with our affective lesson watching Gifted Hands.  For homework, continue reading in your book, My Side of the Mountain, chapters 9-10.  Check TEAMS periodically to see if there is more reading due before we return.  Remember, due to testing, we will not have Target for the next 3 weeks.  We will miss you guys terribly!!

Homework for the Week of February 8, 2021 - Today was a great day to be in Target!  We continued working on our escape plan in the Amazon - realizing we can only move about 8 hours a day!  (Due to carrying supplies and walking through the Rain Forest).  We continued working with our novel, My Side of the Mountain.  We continued with our Venn Perplexors and started a new Divergent Thinking activity - Yamodo.  This is our survivor challenge - winners will be announced on our Live Link for next week's session.  For homework,

•Read Chapters 6-8 (I Meet One of My Own…, The King’s Provider, and What I did About…)  up to page 50.  The titles of the chapters are the links to the Read Alouds.

•On page 37, we see snares that Sam created to catch some rabbits.  Imagine you are on the hunt for rabbits, what kind of trap would you create in the woods.  Sketch and label your trap in your Brain Book.  Upload a picture of it to your Virtual Brain Book (Rabbit Snares).  For Virtual and F2F students.

Don't forget to get your My Side of the Mountain Book!!

Homework for the Week of February 1, 2021- Today we crashed!  In the Amazon, that is.  Our Survivor unit is in full force with a plane crash in the Amazon.  We have planned our route, and are anxiously awaiting our supplies that we can salvage from the plane.  We also completed the next lesson in Algebra!!  We used divergent thinking figuring out the next WWASD scenario.  Great minds think alike!  We saw more of Ben Carson's Gifted Hands and the tough start he had in school.  Finally we continued with MSOTM looking at 4 conversations and the impact on Sam.  We will go over those next week, so make sure it's complete.  For homework, make sure you complete the following:

1) Vote for the Survivor Banner - today is our last day!

2) In Chapter 2, Sam had to create a fishhook with the materials he had available to him.  Use any materials you have available to (safely) create your own type of fishhook.  Take a picture and upload to the digital Brain Book in your Notebook.  Also explain how you made it and if you think it will work.

3) Read Chapters 3 and 4 of the book MSOTM.  If you don't have your book yet, listen to ch. 3 and 4 here.

4) Get the book if you haven't already. :)

Homework for the Week of January 25, 2021 - Today was a blast from the past - teaching everyone virtually.  We did a great job adapting and changing gears to our new classroom.  We worked on all of our standards today!!  We even had a lot of collaboration through TEAMS with our groups.  Congratulations to our Warriors for completing our first Survivor Challenge - being the first tribe to email me the tribal name. For homework, complete the following:

1) Make sure you shared your Tribal banner (PowerPoint slide) with me.  You can send it to my email or just share with my email.  kimberly.fossett-yoder@cobbk12.org.

2)Read the Preface and Chapter 1 of "My Side of the Mountain."  If you don't have the book yet, you can listen to the Preface here and  Chapter 1 here.

3) As you listen, think about what Sam's house looks like.  Sketch your vision in your Brain Book (not your Notebook).  Be prepared to share your sketches next week.

Homework for the Week of January 18, 2021- Today was a great day to be in Target!!  We started our new unit SURVIVOR!!  We will be learning how to survive and doing a novel study with the classic, "My Side of the Mountain" by Jean Craighead George.  Try and get your book before our next Target class.  We started our Affective unit watching the life of famous neurosurgeon, Ben Carson.  This will continue throughout the Spring semester.  We began our next lesson in Hands on Equations, looking at subtracting variables.  We also tried to define the word survivor (which we did a GREAT job doing), then looked at the lives of a Holocaust and Hurricane survivor, and evaluated a new and improved definition of the term Survivor.  For homework,

1)  Visit TEAMS – you will have a new channel that is your Survivor Tribe.  Introduce yourself in the chat to find out who your tribe members are.

2)  Discuss a good name for your Tribe.  Make sure you are respectful and value everyone's opinions.  In the past, some students have used names that dealt with surviving, warriors, etc.  When your tribe has come up with a name (that the majority agrees with), one person submit the name to Mrs. Yoder’s email, Kimberly.fossett-yoder@cobbk12.org.  This is your FIRST Tribal Challenge - the first tribe to email me your tribe's name is the winner for the week.  Look for your Tribal name to show up in unusual places...

3)  As a team, come up with a 2-color theme – this will be explained more next week.  Each week, your tribe members can wear one or both of your tribal colors.

4)  Get the book, “My Side of the Mountain” by Jean Craighead George.

Homework for the Week of January 11, 2021 - Today was our Project Presentation Day!!  Ms. Zentner and I were blown away with how awesome they were!  Some of you went above and beyond on your project and it totally showed!  They were totally awesome!  We also started watching Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, but time just got away from us.  We'll try to finish it up when we return in January.  For homework, Ben wanted me to double it - so you have nothing doubled to get done!!  Tell your parents to look out for Progress Reports and letters about Spring Semester supplies.  Have a wonderful Holiday!  See you next year!

Homework for the Week of December 14, 2020 - Today was a very important day for our projects!  Students were able to show their self-direction!  We were so impressed with the work we saw.  We also worked on some Convergent Thinking Holiday Style - students were able to choose math or verbal logic puzzles to challenge themselves.  We also did an Algebraic Check up today.  Some of us rocked our lessons this first half of the year. For homework, continue working on your project.  Remember you will need 1) The written part (typed or part of your PowerPoint/Sway presentation), 2) The creation- what you chose to focus on in Perspectives, and 3) Be ready to present!  You will have between 1 and 3 minutes.  ROOMIES: Remember to share your technology with Mrs. Yoder or Ms. Zentner so we can project it for all to see.  ZOOMIES: Remember to have some popcorn (or comparable snack) and hot chocolate (or comparable drink) for class.

Homework for the Week of December 8, 2020 - Today was a very productive day in Target!  We submitted Project Proposals for our End of the Unit Project on Perspectives.  We have some very interesting thoughts on how to showcase our learning!  We continued working on our Venn Perplexors.  Students who are struggling, please reach out on TEAMS, so we can meet with you on Wednesdays to help you out.  We are moving right along with our Hands on Equations, learning our 2nd legal move.  We also worked on our Escher-inspired Tessellation masterpieces.  They are looking fabulous!  Some students are behind on this activity since they didn't have homework completed.  At the end of class today, students should have traced out their "puzzle" piece on their paper AND started coloring it.  If you didn't get that far, you will need to work on this at home to get caught up. For homework, students will need to plan their End of Unit Project.

•Create a plan for your project.  Use the planning sheet that is located in your Target Binder/Class Notebook (Unit Work tab).

•Start working on the “Technical” side of your project.  You can begin the PowerPoint or Sway if you are doing these.  Just save everything to your Office 365 account for easy retrieval.

•This will be a self-directed project that will take place at home and some time at school (next week).  So bring any materials you may need!!  We'll have paper for you and some other art supplies that you can use, but if you need something more specific, bring it!

•Presentations will be on Tuesday, December 15th.

Remember if you have questions, reach out on TEAMS!!!  Zoomies - your proposal information will be in your Notebook in Unit Work, Project Proposal page.  Just be patient, I'm getting your information on there as quickly as I can.

Homework for the Week of November 30, 2020 - Today was a great day to have a GREAT day in Target!  We completed another Venn Perplexor - we are getting to be experts on these perplexing puzzles!  We worked on the next lesson in Hands on Equations - learning our first legal move in our Algebra program.  We also looked at a famous artist, MC Escher.  It was amazing to see how he used the art of perspective to create some impossible looking art pieces.  We also go to see all of the fabulous homework assignments - they were fabulous!  Ms. Zentner and myself have so many favorite pieces from your homework!  For homework, make sure you finish your Tessellation piece.  Use your square note card to complete your puzzle piece.  Use this video as a guide.  Click here!  Keep your piece safe and bring it back to Target next time for the finished artwork.  Also, be thinking about your student-led Culminating project for Perspectives.

Choose an area of our unit you enjoyed:

•Different Perspectives of People in History – who would you do?

•Optical Illusions – what could you do with this?

•Zoom perspective book – how can you take this further?

•The Other Side pictures – what 2 stories can you tell through pictures?

•Escher Art – what can you create that was inspired by Escher?

•Forced Perspective Photography – what could you do with it?

Have an idea of what you would like to do next Target week!!

Think outside the box…

Be creative!

How can you show what you’ve learned through Perspectives?

Write this in your Brain Book!

Homework for the Week of November 16, 2020 - We had a fabulous day in Rooms 257, 254, and beyond (Zoomies)!  We conquered another Venn Perplexor - some of us made a huge improvement!  We will continue practicing this convergent thinking skill as we progress through this year.  We started a series of lessons for our Affective lessons, "Our Best Selves."  Today we looked at our emotions that we feel on a regular basis.  We charted 2 days on our mood meters.  We also looked at Forced Perspective Photography with our Unit Work.  Students go to see how to create some trick shots that give the optical illusion of fancy photography.  For homework, create your own Forced Perspective pictures.   Use a device with a camera (phone, tablet, etc.) to create your trick photography.  You may need the help of a parent, sibling, friend, etc. to get the perfect shot.

•Make sure you create one that shows something large, one that shows something super small, and one of your choice.  But remember less is bad, but more is AWESOME!

•Insert these pictures in your Brain Book tab of the Class Notebook.  Add them to your Forced Perspective Photography Portfolio Tab.

•Wow us with your photography skills!!

•Use the link for a quick reminder of how to do these pictures.  Reminder video

Homework for the Week of November 9, 2020- Today was a great working day in Target!  We accomplished so much!  Our Convergent Thinking was challenging again as we progressed with our Venn Perplexors.  We combined Algebra and Halloween for a Cartesian Art Assignment - they turned out cute as a pumpkin!  We also continued looking at the Measures of Central Tendency with neighborhoods and house prices.  Lastly, we looked at a book, The Other Side, and related it to Perspectives.  Then took our Divergent Thinking skills to create our own Perspective comic.  For homework, students will need to first watch the Read Aloud of the book, “The Day the Crayons Quit.”  – The Read Aloud will be linked in TEAMS and here.  Then add the following in your Brain Book (F2F – physical Brain Book and Virtual – Notebook Brain Book):

1.How does this book relate to our unit of Perspectives?  Explain your answer well.

2.Choose a crayon from Duncan’s crayon box.  Write a letter to the crayon of your choice Duncan’s response.  Remember to use proper punctuation and capital letters.  Remember that you are writing as the character Duncan in the book.  Also remember to write a good 4th grade quality letter.

Remember that next Tuesday is a Student Holiday for Election Day - We'll see you in 2 weeks!!

Homework for the Week of October 26, 2020 - Today was another great day to be in Target!  We learned some new things - Venn Perplexors (Convergent Thinking) and Measures of Central Tendency (Unit Work).  These were a bit challenging and stretched our brain!  We continued with our Algebra using Hands on Equations.  We also saw perspectives in different sketches/comics.  This will be an ongoing lesson for us.  Last, we were able to share our Zoom perspective homework assignments.  THEY WERE FABULOUS!!  Oh my goodness, some of you knocked my socks off.  I loved the thought process in your sequence of pictures.  For homework this week, students will need to complete a Free Throw Contest with a total of 4 people.  Each person will have 10 chances to make a shot using a basketball hoop, garbage can, box, etc.  When you have everyone's results, add them to the data chart on your homework sheet.  Then take those scores (and Mrs. Yoder and Ms. Zentner's scores) and find the mean, median, mode, and range of the data.  There is a reference section on your homework sheet if you need reminders of those terms.  Zoomies - this is found in the Brain Book Tab of your Notebook.  Roomies - this is found in your Binder.  Have fun beating Ms. Z and Mrs. Y's scores!

Homework for the Week of October 19, 2020 - Today was a great day!  We continued with our Ken Ken puzzles for more Convergent Challenges.  Some of us are KenKen Kings (and queens) solving the highest levels first.  We began our Algebra program, Hands On Equations, today.  Zoomies, make sure you have all of your materials cut out and ready to go next week!  (This was sent in an email through CTLS to your parents.)  We had our first debate - Cats VS Dogs.  In both debates, the majority feel that a dog is still man's best friend.  Our debaters were fabulous!  And we had the best audience ever on this side of the Mississippi!  We finished the day with another aspect of Perspectives - Zoom!  We saw an illustrator take a picture and zoom out - shocking us with the next piece of the puzzle.  For homework this week, students will need to create a sequence of (at least 3) pictures zooming out for each one.  Zoomies can use 3 sheets of their Brain Book OR create a flip book using 2 pieces of copy paper.  Roomies will need to complete these on their flip books.  Be prepared to share in class next week.  Click on this sentence to access the link to review the book, Zoom, for inspiration.  Don't forget to do your homework!!

Homework for the Week of October 12, 2020 - Today was the most unusual day of my teaching career!!  We had a successful day!  Our "Zoomies" and "Roomies" were awesome.  We started a brand new convergent puzzle, Ken Kens.  These really stretched our brains!!  We completed some divergent activities - the creativity was amazing!  We also started looking at a debate - rules and an example podcast.  What a neat way to see different perspectivesFor homework, students need to complete their "research" on dogs vs cats. Do some “research” on what makes the best pet: a dog or a cat?  When “researching” this, make a list of reasons for each animal in your  Class Notebook under the Brain Book tab.  F2F students will complete their reasons on paper/pencil.   Your research will include jotting down your thoughts and those of your family members.  Remember to think of both perspectives, even if you prefer one pet over the other.  Think of as many ideas as you can (Fluency).  If you are F2F students, don't forget to bring your "Target Supplies" in a Ziploc to class if you haven't already.  We'll keep them safely in the room for you.

Homework for the Week of October 5, 2020 - Today's Target class zoomed right by for me!  Before I knew it, it was time to wrap up - a sign of a successful day!!  We worked on Hidatos for Convergent Thinking.  We had some students challenge themselves to a higher level - GREAT job!  If it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you!  We looked at our Unit Work - seeing the relationship of Observational skills and perspectives.  Students reflected on this on Padlet.  We also saw a different side of history with The Ride of Paul Revere - seeing the humorous side of history with "Adam Ruins Paul Revere."  Again looking at perspectives in history.  And we ended our day with Divergent Thinking, we are not thinking "outside of the box" but thinking differently about a box.  Students ideated in their Brain Books things they would do with a box.  I want to see how students use FEFO - Fluency, Elaboration, Flexibility, and Originality on this project.

For Asynchronous/Independent work, complete the following:

A.Think Differently About a Box!  Use Divergent Thinking to transform a box into something else.  Remember to use your FEFO skills (a reminder should be in your Brain Book), look at your Brainstorming list (in your Brain Book), and create.  If you are staying virtual – please take a picture and upload it into TEAMS in the assignment “Think Inside the Box.” You can also create a Flip Grid, so you can explain your creation. If you are coming back to school F2F, please bring it on your next Target day. If your creation is too large - please upload a picture or complete a FlipGrid for it.

B.Finish any classwork from the day.

          Hidato

          Padlet Reflection :      https://padlet.com/kimberlyfossettyoder/x4rja086b4jk35jp

Have a great FALL Break!  Rest up, spend time with family, and have fun!  If you are returning to Face 2 Face instruction, we'll see you in the classroom!  If you are staying remote, we'll see you on Zoom!

Homework for the Week of September 21, 2020 - What a great and busy day today in Target!  Time flew by... We worked on a Door Doodle looking at goal for our future.  Students created a visual representation of that Open Door in Brain Books.  I can't wait for us to create these for display.  We also looked at advertisements that promoted statistics.  We must look at these with a critical eye!  Right in the middle of class, we witnessed a raucous in Mrs. Yoder's room.  Have no fear, we have witness statements being filled out to help solve the puzzle.  Everything led us to the realization that we must look at different perspectives in all situations.

For Asynchronous/Independent work, complete the following:

1.Paul Revere’s Ride -  Given a specific source, read and analyze the information.  Complete the “Paul         Revere’s Ride” sheet in your Evaluative Thinking Tab in your Class Notebook.

2.Finish any classwork from the day.

A.Open Door Activity in your Brain Book

           B. Padlet Reflection : https://padlet.com/kimberlyfossettyoder/Bookmarks

C.Witness Statement in Unit Work Tab of Class Notebook

Homework for the Week of September 15, 2020 - Today was another GREAT day in Target!  We had minimal technical difficulties during our time together.  Just remember to try and troubleshoot, and if you are kicked out of Zoom, rejoin by going to the "Announcements" section of our CTLS class to come back in.  We saw the benefits of Class Notebook today with eliminating the idea of "submitting" assignments.  Class Notebook is an automatic way to submit assignments.  This will help with that tech trouble.  We started our Weighty Words - ask your child what abasement means.  We finished a quote fall looking at perspectives.  Review that in your Convergent Thinking tab of the Notebook.  We saw the other side of the story "Andrew Jackson: Hero or Villain?"  After hearing the other side, we voted as a class.  86% of our students feel that Andrew Jackson is more of a Villain.  We also saw how statistics change our perspectives.  We saw how sometimes true facts are used but are written to change our outlook on the information.

For Independent Work Time, complete the following:

  1. Quote Fall – Submit and explain its meaning in your Class Notebook.  Just add a text box under the quote fall with your explanation.

  2. Optical Illusions  Assignment found in TEAMS – View the PowerPoint, and your Optical Illusions will be submitted in Class Notebook in Unit Work.

  3. .In your Brain Book, answer these questions…

  • What do you want  to see happen this year?

  • What do you want to see happen in the next 5 years?

  • What do you want to see happen after high school?

Homework for the Week of September 7, 2020 - Today was a GREAT day!  We did have our occasional "Plot Twist" but overall great day.  We are learning with CTLS, TEAMS, and CLASS NOTEBOOK, be patient!  We'll get there!  Soon we will be zooming back and forth effortless.

As a recap, we looked at the power of "yet" today collaborating with small groups in our Discussion Board.  Ms. Zentner and Mrs. Yoder loved reading the discussions.  We started our unit looking at different perspectives with pictures, opinions, a book, and even a President.  We found that we have to look at different sides of a story/picture to see the whole thing correctly.

For Independent Work Time, complete the following:

  1. Go to the Teacher Perspective Discussion Topic.  Open it up and look for the Padlet link (next to "For Later") to vote for your choice: Should cell phones be allowed in school? To vote, choose the heart of the box you agree with.

  2. Andrew Jackson - The Hero!  In TEAMS or CTLS, you can reread the directions for the assignment.  After researching, planning, and writing it out in your Brain Book, complete the Flip Grid video of your persuasion. You can read straight from your Brain Book if you'd like.

  3. To get ready for next week, look at the Quote Fall in your Class Notebook (in Convergent Thinking Tab).  Try to find at least 5 words.  You should be able to write on the screen.

You can always get help in TEAMS from 1:00 - 2:30.

Homework for the Week of August 31, 2020 - Today was our first official day in Target!  We had a great day, even with some technical difficulties.  Many parents were contacting us through Remind, which is a great resource while we are on CTLS with the students.

As a recap, we go to know about our Target Teachers, we learned about Virtual Etiquette in our classroom, we talked through how to use CTLS for assignments/navigation, and we looked at how to take a mistake and turn it into a beautiful oops!  We had several "Plot Twists" today as things didn't go our way!  We are learning to be flexible with that!

Students will need to complete the following assignments:

  1. In your Brain Book, evaluate our quote fall. "When you make a mistake, Oops! Think of it as an opportunity to make something beautiful!" What does it mean to you?

  2. Complete your All About Me PowerPoint slide.  Submit it in CTLS.

  3. Use Divergent Thinking to take an imperfect leaf, and make it into a Beautiful Oops!  Remember to keep this in your Brain Book.

These assignments can be found in CTLS in our Digital Session.

Homework for the week of August 24, 2020 -

Try logging into your Target Class in CTLS - watch the Welcome Video and explore the digital classroom.  Some items are links to other areas.  Have fun!  See you in Target on Tuesday, August 25th!
